Country Pines Quilt Shop

CPQS07079: Pick-a-Posie

Donna Greenwald is coming to Country Pines Quilt Shop! In her Pick-a-Posie class you will learn her fusing techniques, construct flowers and leaves and learn techniques for shading and thread painting.  Watch your flowers come to life!  Donna will help you organize your composition and make fabric choices for your background.  She can also offer suggestions for quilting.  Donna provides one pattern and you can pick from the hollyhock, geranium, or hibiscus.  This is an entry level class for quilters who are very familiar with their sewing machines and would like to explore art quilting as an extension of their quilting skills.  No prior experience or artistic aptitude is necessary.

CLASS DESCRIPTION -- This class is an introduction to fusible appliqué, free motion thread painting and embellishment techniques. Flowers are perfect subjects to learn these techniques. As your class project, select one from Donna's patterns of hollyhocks, hibiscus, or geraniums.  Examples of her flower wall hangings can be viewed on my website, donnagreenwald.com

FIRST CLASS—During this class you will learn to construct the flowers and leaves. Donna will demonstrate some techniques for shading the flower petals. You will be able to use my inks and pens to complete your flowers. She will discuss leaf and background fabric selection and construction. No machine needed the first day.

SECOND AND THIRD CLASSES—during the second class, Donna will demonstrate thread painting both flowers and leaves. You will have the day to work on your flowers and construct your leaves. The third day she will work individually with those ready to move on to the next step. If you have your background selected and constructed, you will be ready to apply and thread paint your leaves.

MATERIALS LIST FOR FIRST CLASS
• Pattern of your choice, If you let the store know your pattern choice, they can provide a specific materials list for that pattern.
• A light box, if you have one, is very helpful.
• 1 to 2 yards of light weight fusing material, depending on width. My favorites are Soft Fuse, Steam a Seam lite, (if you can find it) or    Wonder Under.
• Appliqué pressing sheet or parchment paper.
• Black, fine point, permanent marking pen.
• Small, sharp pointed scissors and regular shears.
• Portable ironing surface and small iron.
• 1 yard, light weight, stitch and tear stabilizer.

  • Fabrics and thread are determined by your flower choice.  In general you need several scraps of fabric in light, medium and dark values.  Marbles, batiks, hand dyed or prints with small or indistinct prints work well for floral appliqué.  Since the first day is a construction day, you can wait to decide thread type and color until you finish the flower.  The same is true for creating a background for your piece.  Donna likes to be able to audition my flower on different backgrounds to determine the most dramatic contrast.
  • When the flowers are constructed, we will have a discussion and demonstration of the many ways we can shade and embellish our flowers to give them dimension and a sense of reality.  Donna will have many embellishment materials that you will be welcome to use.

MATERIALS LIST FOR SECOND AND THIRD CLASSES—

  • Sewing machine, in good working order, with free motion or darning foot attachment.
  • Arm extension is very helpful.
  • Fabric and thread choices needed for your leaves and background.
  • More fusing material for leaves.
  • Clear, monofilament thread to attach flowers and leaves to the background.  You may prefer or your machine may require a different thread.
